Why do I feel like I'm not cut out for leadership?

Climbing the corporate ladder can be challenging, even disheartening at times. Many of us, particularly new leaders, find ourselves wondering if we’re missing some vital trait or skill that others seem to have. But as Richard Bandler wisely said, "You are not broken; you just work perfectly to produce results you’re not happy with." When things don’t go to plan, it’s easy to assume the fault lies within. But here’s the truth: you’re not broken.

Your current experiences are not a reflection of your future potential. The setbacks, insecurities, and doubts you face are all part of a journey towards growth and success. What’s most important is recognising that the results you’re seeing now don’t define your capabilities. With the right support and guidance, you can shape these experiences into stepping stones for growth.

New Leaders Need Support to Thrive

Transitioning into leadership roles or running your own business is exciting but can be isolating. Too often, organisations promote talented individuals but fail to provide the guidance and support they need to succeed. The reality is that growth requires a safe space to make mistakes and learn from them, and new leaders deserve this space to flourish.

If you’re feeling uncertain or overwhelmed, take a step back and reflect. The path to success is rarely straightforward, and every challenge offers a chance to learn.

Here are some questions to guide your journey:

  • What can I learn from this situation? Identifying lessons helps turn setbacks into growth opportunities.

  • How can I adjust my approach? Adapting to change is a key leadership skill. Small tweaks can lead to big results.

  • What small step can I take today? Each small step is progress, and progress leads to confidence and momentum.

Building Resilience and Confidence

Every successful leader has faced their share of struggles. These early challenges teach us resilience and build confidence, shaping us into stronger, more adaptable individuals. Embrace your journey, as it’s the foundation of your unique leadership story.
